At Fairhills High School, students have access to a comprehensive Basketball Academy that provides both skill development and pathway opportunities across all year levels. The program combines core learning with enrichment experiences, ensuring students are challenged, supported and inspired to excel.
Our Basketball Academy is built on a holistic approach that aligns with our school vision of empowering students to be curious, creative and confident learners. Students develop not only their technical ability, but also teamwork, resilience and leadership through meaningful and engaging experiences.
Year 7 and 8
In Years 7 and 8, students build strong foundations through dedicated basketball classes. Students focus on skill development, game understanding and teamwork.
Students also have opportunities to participate in:
- 3×3 basketball competitions
- Victorian Secondary School competitions
- School Sport Victoria events
Year 9 and 10
In Years 9 and 10, the program expands to five periods per cycle, with a strong focus on leadership and deeper understanding of the game.
Students engage in:
- Refereeing and officiating
- Coaching and leadership development
- Skill analysis and performance improvement
Year 11 and 12
In the senior years, students access advanced opportunities that support both performance and future pathways.
These include:
- Competing at high level school championships e.g. Australian Championship in Queensland
Participation in exhibition games - Sport and Recreation studies

Students in the Basketball Academy have the opportunity to compete against top school programs, building confidence and resilience in high-level environments.
Beyond competition, students can:
- Complete refereeing courses
- Run and support tournaments
- Develop leadership and organisational skills

The Basketball Academy supports students to continuously improve their skills across all year levels, while developing strong learning habits and personal responsibility.
Through structured goal setting, coaching and reflection, students are empowered to take ownership of their growth and strive for excellence both on and off the court.

Basketball Academy Selection Process
All students enrolling into Year 7 at Fairhills High School may apply for the Basketball Academy.
Step 1: Complete by Friday August 21 – Basketball Academy Expression of Interest (link available from 25 June)
Step 2: Friday 4 September – Shortlisted students invited to attend Try-outs or unsuccessful application letter.
Step 3: Friday 16 October (9:00am-10:30am) – Basketball Try-outs (FHS Gym)
Step 4: Friday 23 October – Acceptance letter or unsuccessful application letter
