Independent Reading

The Year 7 and 8 English teachers and Library staff have recently been working with students to foster independent reading in class.
Independent reading is about:

  1. Choosing a text that is right for you
  2. Spending time reading the text
  3. Using strategies to understand the text
  4. Reflecting on your reading of the text
  5. Talking to others about the text
  6. Improving reading skills

These strategies can be used by all students in their reading. Favourite books selected by our Year 7 and 8 students to read in class include:

  • The One of Us is Lying Series by Karen McManus
  • The Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series by Jeff Kinney
  • Amulet Series (Graphic Novel) by Kazu Kibushi
  • Divergent Series by Veronica Roth
  • Wings of Fire Series (Graphic Novel) by Tui Sutherland
  • Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien
