Year 7 – Discovery: 3D Design & Merge Cube

On Tuesday 6 and 7 May, our Year 7 students had their first exciting visit to KIOSC at Swinburne University for a hands-on experience in 3D design. Across the two days all 4 classes explored digital creativity through a specially designed program led by the knowledgeable and supportive KIOSC staff.

The two parts of the program included introduction to 3D modelling using Tinkercad, where students created their own imaginative designs and learnt how digital models can be brought to life. In the second part of the program, students entered the world of virtual reality development using CoSpaces, where they used coding to create interactive 3D VR environments.

It was a fantastic chance for students to combine creativity with technology, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Many were surprised by how much they could achieve in just one day and left inspired by the program.

We thank the team at KIOSC for providing such an engaging and enriching experience!

Year 8 – Designing Sustainable Futures

Our Year 8 students took a deep dive into sustainable design and innovation. As part of the Sustainable Futures curriculum, students explored how intelligent house design can dramatically reduce the energy needed for heating and cooling. They also investigated the potential of vertical farming as a solution to urban food challenges, using robotics and coding to build and program their own vertical farms. Rounding out the day, students tested and compared four different renewable energy sources by collecting data on energy output, reinforcing the importance of clean energy in our future.

Year 9: Students Step into Melbourne’s Past and Present

On Wednesday 23 April, the Year 9 cohort ventured into the heart of Melbourne for a captivating exploration of the CBD and the Yarra River precinct. This enriching excursion brought history to life as students delved into the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Melbourne’s transformation into a bustling hub of business and innovation.

Guided through the city’s iconic laneways and historic arcades, students uncovered layers of Melbourne’s rich cultural tapestry — from its architectural evolution to its vibrant street art. The journey culminated with a scenic walk across the historic Princes Bridge, leading to Southbank where students enjoyed a well-earned lunch by the river.

The day not only deepened our understanding of Melbourne’s past but also sparked excitement for our upcoming City Experience at the end of Term 2. Year 9 can’t wait to return and continue discovering all that Melbourne has to offer!

Year 9/10 Things that Kill – Discovery: Genetics & Microarrays

On Monday 5 May, Things that Kill students in Years 9 and 10 attended Discovery: Genetics & Microarrays at KIOSC, where they delved into cutting-edge biotechnology. From exploring how microarrays are used in gene analysis to hands-on investigations into DNA and genetic traits, students gained insight into modern genetic research and its real-world applications in medicine and agriculture.

Students acted as Doctors investigating medical records to suggested possible causes of diseases like cancer. Students carried out genetic testing to determine if cells indicated they were cancerous. Completed micro array analysis to determine suitable drug treatment for patients based on the presence of particular genes.

Year 11 Vocational Major

Year 11 students have been creating Factsheets on a topic of their choice. Students had to pick a topic, then complete research on their topic. Once this was complete students had to develop a simple factsheet to inform others about their topic. Students chose a very wide variety of topics such as, the Carton Football Club, Gothic Architecture and Dirt Bikes. Students had to also include a bibliography with their work.
