Principal’s Message

Anzac Day
Each year, ANZAC Day gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the incredible sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand soldiers. On 25 April, we remember those who served at Gallipoli in 1915 and all those who have served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions since.
Rather than just retelling history, ANZAC Day asks us to consider the values that shaped our nation—bravery, mateship, resilience, and selflessness. One powerful example is the story of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, known simply as Simpson and his donkey. During the Gallipoli campaign, Simpson used a donkey to carry wounded soldiers to safety. His quiet bravery and compassion remain one of the most enduring symbols of the ANZAC spirit.
At Fairhills High School, we were proud to have our student leaders attend the local ANZAC Dawn Service. They represented our school with dignity and respect, honouring the legacy of those who served and upholding the values we cherish as a school community. Their commitment and conduct were a credit to themselves, their families and Fairhills.
ANZAC Day is more than a moment in time—it is a chance to think about the kind of world we want to build. As we remember the past, we are also reminded of our role in shaping a peaceful future—one built on empathy, unity, and shared responsibility.
Lest we forget.
From “I Don’t Know” to “I’ll Find Out”
At Fairhills High School, we’re on a mission to empower our students to be curious, creative and confident learners. A big part of that journey begins with how we respond when faced with a challenge. One of the most common phrases we hear from students is:
“I don’t know.”
It’s an honest response—one that reflects a moment of uncertainty. But rather than seeing it as an endpoint, we encourage our students to treat it as a starting point for learning.
Recently, Dr Kilgore shared a story about a student grappling with a difficult maths concept. At first, they admitted, “I don’t get this.” Instead of giving up, they took the next step: “I’ll find out.” This student stayed back after class, asked thoughtful questions, practised different strategies, and made a few mistakes along the way—which only helped them improve. By the end of the week, they not only understood the concept but were helping others with it too.
That’s what confident learning looks like.
This mindset extends beyond the classroom as well. A few years ago, one of our students decided to try a sport they had never played before. “I don’t know how to do this,” they said. But instead of stepping back, they leaned in with the same determination: “I’ll find out.” They joined training sessions, made mistakes, learned from their peers, and kept showing up. This term, that same student was part of the Fairhills team that won the U17 female 3X3 Victorian Championships. Well done!
These examples remind us that success isn’t about knowing everything from the start—it’s about having the curiosity to explore, the creativity to try new strategies, and the confidence to persist through challenges.
We encourage every student at Fairhills to shift their mindset by adding one simple word to “I don’t know”:
“Yet.”
Then ask, “How can I find out?”
It’s a small shift, but a powerful one. Because every time a student says, “I’ll find out,” they take another step forward as a learner—and as a member of a community that embraces growth.
Let’s continue to support and celebrate this mindset across our school. Together, we’re not just preparing for CATs, SACs and exams—we’re building lifelong learners who are ready to take on the world.
