Anzac Day

Each year, ANZAC Day gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the incredible sacrifices made by Australian and New Zealand soldiers. On 25 April, we remember those who served at Gallipoli in 1915 and all those who have served in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping missions since.

Rather than just retelling history, ANZAC Day asks us to consider the values that shaped our nation—bravery, mateship, resilience, and selflessness. One powerful example is the story of John Simpson Kirkpatrick, known simply as Simpson and his donkey. During the Gallipoli campaign, Simpson used a donkey to carry wounded soldiers to safety. His quiet bravery and compassion remain one of the most enduring symbols of the ANZAC spirit.

At Fairhills High School, we were proud to have our student leaders attend the local ANZAC Dawn Service. They represented our school with dignity and respect, honouring the legacy of those who served and upholding the values we cherish as a school community. Their commitment and conduct were a credit to themselves, their families and Fairhills.

ANZAC Day is more than a moment in time—it is a chance to think about the kind of world we want to build. As we remember the past, we are also reminded of our role in shaping a peaceful future—one built on empathy, unity, and shared responsibility.

Lest we forget.

From “I Don’t Know” to “I’ll Find Out”

At Fairhills High School, we’re on a mission to empower our students to be curious, creative and confident learners. A big part of that journey begins with how we respond when faced with a challenge. One of the most common phrases we hear from students is:
“I don’t know.”

It’s an honest response—one that reflects a moment of uncertainty. But rather than seeing it as an endpoint, we encourage our students to treat it as a starting point for learning.

Recently, Dr Kilgore shared a story about a student grappling with a difficult maths concept. At first, they admitted, “I don’t get this.” Instead of giving up, they took the next step: “I’ll find out.” This student stayed back after class, asked thoughtful questions, practised different strategies, and made a few mistakes along the way—which only helped them improve. By the end of the week, they not only understood the concept but were helping others with it too.

That’s what confident learning looks like.

This mindset extends beyond the classroom as well. A few years ago, one of our students decided to try a sport they had never played before. “I don’t know how to do this,” they said. But instead of stepping back, they leaned in with the same determination: “I’ll find out.” They joined training sessions, made mistakes, learned from their peers, and kept showing up. This term, that same student was part of the Fairhills team that won the U17 female 3X3 Victorian Championships. Well done!

These examples remind us that success isn’t about knowing everything from the start—it’s about having the curiosity to explore, the creativity to try new strategies, and the confidence to persist through challenges.

We encourage every student at Fairhills to shift their mindset by adding one simple word to “I don’t know”:

“Yet.”

Then ask, “How can I find out?”

It’s a small shift, but a powerful one. Because every time a student says, “I’ll find out,” they take another step forward as a learner—and as a member of a community that embraces growth.

Let’s continue to support and celebrate this mindset across our school. Together, we’re not just preparing for CATs, SACs and exams—we’re building lifelong learners who are ready to take on the world.

Year 7 – Discovery: 3D Design & Merge Cube

On Tuesday 6 and 7 May, our Year 7 students had their first exciting visit to KIOSC at Swinburne University for a hands-on experience in 3D design. Across the two days all 4 classes explored digital creativity through a specially designed program led by the knowledgeable and supportive KIOSC staff.

The two parts of the program included introduction to 3D modelling using Tinkercad, where students created their own imaginative designs and learnt how digital models can be brought to life. In the second part of the program, students entered the world of virtual reality development using CoSpaces, where they used coding to create interactive 3D VR environments.

It was a fantastic chance for students to combine creativity with technology, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Many were surprised by how much they could achieve in just one day and left inspired by the program.

We thank the team at KIOSC for providing such an engaging and enriching experience!

Year 8 – Designing Sustainable Futures

Our Year 8 students took a deep dive into sustainable design and innovation. As part of the Sustainable Futures curriculum, students explored how intelligent house design can dramatically reduce the energy needed for heating and cooling. They also investigated the potential of vertical farming as a solution to urban food challenges, using robotics and coding to build and program their own vertical farms. Rounding out the day, students tested and compared four different renewable energy sources by collecting data on energy output, reinforcing the importance of clean energy in our future.

Year 9: Students Step into Melbourne’s Past and Present

On Wednesday 23 April, the Year 9 cohort ventured into the heart of Melbourne for a captivating exploration of the CBD and the Yarra River precinct. This enriching excursion brought history to life as students delved into the impact of the Industrial Revolution on Melbourne’s transformation into a bustling hub of business and innovation.

Guided through the city’s iconic laneways and historic arcades, students uncovered layers of Melbourne’s rich cultural tapestry — from its architectural evolution to its vibrant street art. The journey culminated with a scenic walk across the historic Princes Bridge, leading to Southbank where students enjoyed a well-earned lunch by the river.

The day not only deepened our understanding of Melbourne’s past but also sparked excitement for our upcoming City Experience at the end of Term 2. Year 9 can’t wait to return and continue discovering all that Melbourne has to offer!

Year 9/10 Things that Kill – Discovery: Genetics & Microarrays

On Monday 5 May, Things that Kill students in Years 9 and 10 attended Discovery: Genetics & Microarrays at KIOSC, where they delved into cutting-edge biotechnology. From exploring how microarrays are used in gene analysis to hands-on investigations into DNA and genetic traits, students gained insight into modern genetic research and its real-world applications in medicine and agriculture.

Students acted as Doctors investigating medical records to suggested possible causes of diseases like cancer. Students carried out genetic testing to determine if cells indicated they were cancerous. Completed micro array analysis to determine suitable drug treatment for patients based on the presence of particular genes.

Year 11 Vocational Major

Year 11 students have been creating Factsheets on a topic of their choice. Students had to pick a topic, then complete research on their topic. Once this was complete students had to develop a simple factsheet to inform others about their topic. Students chose a very wide variety of topics such as, the Carton Football Club, Gothic Architecture and Dirt Bikes. Students had to also include a bibliography with their work.

3×3 Basketball

The Under 17 Fairhills Girls Basketball Team are Division 2 State Champions after an outstanding performance at the recent 3×3 Basketball State Finals at the State Basketball Centre. The girls powered through the tournament, finishing second in their pool and going on to win the quarterfinal (18-10), semifinal (15-5), and a thrilling grand final against Sandringham College (16-15). Their success reflects months of hard work, dedication, and teamwork.

The Boys Basketball Team also impressed, finishing fourth overall. Despite a challenging start, the boys rallied to win their final pool match and continued their momentum with victories in the round of 16 (21-11) and quarterfinal (21-15), before narrowly missing a spot in the grand final.

Congratulations to both teams, their coaches, and supporters for representing Fairhills with pride and passion!

The Power of Showing Up: Celebrating 100% Attendance

At the heart of every successful student is a simple but powerful habit—showing up. Attendance is more than just a mark on the roll; it’s a reflection of commitment, responsibility, and a drive to succeed. When students attend school consistently, they engage more deeply in learning, build stronger relationships with peers and teachers, and develop routines that support lifelong success.

This term, we are proud to celebrate 70 students across Years 7–12 who achieved an incredible milestone: 100% attendance. These students exemplified dedication by showing up every single day, demonstrating resilience, reliability, and a strong work ethic.

To acknowledge their outstanding efforts, each student received 50 SWPB (School-Wide Positive Behaviour) points as a token of appreciation for their commitment to their learning and attendance.

Congratulations and thank you to these students for setting such a positive example. Your consistency and determination are truly inspiring, and we hope your achievement encourages others to strive for the same excellence.

Let’s continue to make attendance a priority—because every -day counts, and success begins with showing up.

Year 7 Concert Band – First Rehearsal Success!

In the final week of Term 1, our new Year 7 Concert Band came together for their very first rehearsal – and what a fantastic start it was! The students quickly settled in, showing great enthusiasm, focus, and teamwork as they began learning to play together as a full band. It was exciting to hear the first sounds of what promises to be a wonderful ensemble. We look forward to watching their skills grow and sharing their musical journey with our school community throughout the year.

Yellow Arrow Leadership Training Day

Yellow Arrow visited Fairhills High School late Term 1 to spend the morning with the student leadership team (and Scout!). The students learned more about their personal leadership style and reflected on how they can best work together as a team. Here is some feedback from the students about what they learned and enjoyed:

“Thanks for helping me understand more about personal leadership and comfort zones!” – year 10 student

“Being a leader takes time and practice, I can be a leader even if I have many weaknesses” – year 10 student

“It was fun thanks! It is different every time I have done it.” – Year 9 student

It was great to see our student leadership team make the most of their day, and work together to make goals for this year. We are very lucky to have great students, willing to go above and beyond to show leadership and courage ensuring our students’ voice is heard.

Wellbeing Support

Read Time: ( words)

Accessing Support through Wellbeing for Students

The Wellbeing Team can support students to navigate challenges that may be impacting on their ability to engage in learning or general feelings of wellbeing. This can include: transitions and adjusting to change, family or relationship difficulties, grief and loss, mental health concerns, drug and alcohol concerns, and many other challenges that young people encounter.

An initial appointment with a member of the wellbeing team will be an assessment of need with the student or family which will help to decide the best support option for the student. Support options available through the Wellbeing Team are:

  • Individual short-term counselling, psychoeducation and skills development
  • Group programs
  • Referrals to external support agencies.
  • Students may also be encouraged to access self-help strategies or resources.

Referrals to see someone from the team are made through year level leaders. Parents, students or teachers with concerns are encouraged to speak to their year level leader. Students or parents can also make an appointment directly with someone from the Wellbeing Team by attending the Wellbeing Centre, calling the school office or contacting us via email at wellbeing@fairhillshs.vic.edu.au

Year level leaders who are made aware of concerns by a teacher will always endeavour to make contact with parents before referring a student to the Wellbeing team.
All counselling sessions with students are confidential and information is only shared if a student is deemed to be at risk of harm.
If you or anyone you know needs immediate support, please contact KidsHelpline or lifeline on the numbers at the bottom of this page

What’s on in Wellbeing?

The Wellbeing Centre is open at recess and lunchtime for students who need a quiet, safe place to regulate or access support. The centre is also used for lunchtime group programs which are advertised through compass or on notice boards.

Accessing Support for Families

Many families, at some stage, need a little extra support to manage the normal challenges of life as well as the more difficult situations that arise. If you are experiencing hardship, stress or circumstances that are impacting on the wellbeing of your family life or your ability to cope, the Wellbeing Team can help to connect you with community services that can provide support. Please contact the Wellbeing Team via the school phone number or via email at wellbeing@fairhillshs.vic.edu.au

Clothing Support: Thread Together

We recently partnered with Thread Together to provide free and brand clothing for students in need. Thread Together collects brand new unsold clothing from all around the country, saving it from landfill.
