Anzac Day

Each year, Anzac Day provides an important opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand men and women in times of war, conflict and peacekeeping. It is a moment to look beyond history and consider the values that continue to shape who we are as a nation.

The stories at the heart of Anzac Day speak to courage, resilience, mateship and selflessness. These are not just qualities of the past, but values that remain relevant in how we treat one another and contribute to our community today.

Ceremonies such as Anzac Day hold deep significance. They call for quiet reflection, respect and an understanding of the importance of the occasion. These moments remind us of the responsibility we have to honour those who have served through our actions, our conduct and the respect we show in both formal settings and everyday life.

At Fairhills High School, this connects strongly to our vision of empowering our community to be curious, creative and confident learners. Being a confident learner includes demonstrating respect and integrity. Being a curious learner involves seeking to understand the experiences of others, both past and present. Being a creative learner means thinking about how we contribute positively to the world around us.

Anzac Day reminds us that remembrance is not passive. It is an opportunity to reflect on the kind of community we want to build, one grounded in respect, empathy and shared responsibility.

Listening to Our Community: Student Dashboards

At Fairhills High School, we are committed to continually strengthening student learning and engagement. As part of this work, we are introducing new student dashboards that provide a clearer picture of each student’s progress across the Learning Cultures, alongside their attendance.

This initiative is grounded in our vision of empowering our community to be curious, creative and confident learners. The dashboards are designed to support meaningful conversations between students, families and teachers, while also building student ownership of learning. By making progress more visible, students are better able to understand where they are at, what they are doing well, and what their next steps are.

An important part of this process has been hearing directly from our community. We have sought feedback from students, staff and families to ensure the dashboards are clear, useful and genuinely support understanding of each child’s learning.

This feedback is playing a key role in shaping and refining the dashboards before their full implementation. It ensures that what we develop reflects the needs of our community and supports strong partnerships between home and school.

We thank our community for their ongoing engagement and for the valuable input that continues to strengthen this work.

Contribution Fees – Thank You for Your Support

At Fairhills High School, we are proud of the strong partnership we share with our community. We would like to sincerely thank all families who have contributed to the school this year. Your support plays an important role in enriching the learning environment for every student.

Voluntary contributions allow us to go beyond the basics and continue to improve the quality of our learning spaces, resources and facilities. These enhancements directly support student engagement, wellbeing and achievement, and help bring our vision to life of empowering our community to be curious, creative and confident learners.

In the past, contributions have supported a range of significant improvements across the school. These include upgraded classroom furniture in all Year 7 to 10 learning spaces, modernised library facilities, resurfacing of the sports stadium, the installation of BenQ presentation boards in all classrooms, and upgrades to whiteboards, pinboards and student areas. Looking ahead, further enhancements such as the modernisation of the Year 7 and 8 courtyard will continue to improve the daily experience for our students.

It was particularly pleasing to see the Parent and Carer Survey identify our school grounds and facilities as a clear strength, reflecting the significant progress we have made in this area over recent years.

Importantly, these contributions are not just about physical resources. They reflect a shared commitment to providing the best possible opportunities for all students and strengthening the sense of pride and belonging within our school community.

Student Engagement and Wellbeing

It has been a fantastic start to Term 2, with the recent warmer weather providing a positive and energising return to school. As we now move into the cooler winter months, this is a timely opportunity to focus on keeping our students healthy, connected, and ready to learn.

Winter Wellness

With colder weather comes an increase in seasonal illness. We encourage all students to take simple steps to stay well, including dressing warmly, maintaining good hygiene, and getting enough rest. Wearing layers, including appropriate undergarments, is a practical way for students to stay warm throughout the day, particularly during early morning starts and outdoor transitions between classes.

Students are reminded to wear the correct school uniform to support warmth and comfort. Approved outerwear and additional layers can make a significant difference during colder days. The school beanie is also available for purchase from the main office, providing a great option for students to keep warm while remaining in full school uniform.

Nutrition Matters

Good nutrition plays a key role in supporting both wellbeing and learning. Starting the day with a healthy breakfast helps students maintain energy, focus, and concentration in class. Our Breakfast Club runs every morning, providing students with a welcoming and supportive start to the day. In addition, food stations are available around the school to ensure students can access snacks and maintain energy levels throughout the day.

Attendance – Every Day Counts

Regular attendance remains a key priority at Fairhills High School. Every day at school provides valuable opportunities for learning, connection, and growth. Even missing a small number of days can impact student progress over time. We ask families to continue supporting strong attendance habits and reinforcing the importance of being at school every day.

If your child is absent, please ensure that an explanation is provided promptly via Compass or via the Attendance Hotline on 9758 5022. This allows us to accurately monitor attendance and provide support where needed.

Celebrating Attendance Success

We would like to congratulate all students who achieved 100% attendance in Term one. This is an outstanding accomplishment that reflects commitment, resilience, and a strong dedication to learning. As part of our SWPBS framework, each of these students has been awarded 50 SWPBS points, which can be exchanged at the points shop. We are incredibly proud of this achievement and encourage all students to strive towards consistent attendance throughout Term 2.

Teaching and Learning

It has been a really positive start to Term 2 across the school. Classrooms have settled quickly back into strong routines and it has been great to see students engaging positively with their learning after the break.

As a school, our focus this term continues to centre on helping every student understand what they are learning, how they are going and what they need to do next.

A key part of this work is our ongoing focus on feedback and improvement. Across all classes, teachers are working with students to better understand rubrics, reflect on their work and use feedback to make genuine improvements. This is particularly important as students move into the senior years, where the ability to act on feedback is critical for success in VCE.

In addition, students across the school will begin more structured opportunities to set goals and track their progress. This work will link directly to Learning Conferences later in the year and to student reports, helping students take greater ownership of their learning.

We are also continuing our focus on consistent classroom practice across the school. Students should expect to see clear Learning Intentions, Success Criteria and lesson structures in every class. These routines provide clarity, reduce uncertainty and help students focus on what matters most…their learning.

For our senior students, there has been a strong emphasis on building effective study habits and exam preparation skills. Developing these habits early in Term 2 is important as SACs continue and exams approach later in the term.

As always, the partnership between school and home plays a vital role. A simple conversation at home about what your child is learning, what feedback they have received, or what their next goal is can make a significant difference.

Year 8 Students Dive into STEM Innovation at KIOSC

This month, our Year 8 students had the exciting opportunity to visit KIOSC at Swinburne University for an engaging, hands-on STEM experience. All students took part in a full day of creativity, design, and problem-solving.

During the excursion, students were challenged to design and build their own working arcade-style games, combining digital technologies, engineering, and creative thinking. Throughout the day, they explored the design process from concept to creation, gaining valuable insight into how ideas can be transformed into functional prototypes.

Working collaboratively, students designed and constructed their own arcade-style games. A highlight for many was using laser cutting technology to build a tabletop basketball game, where they saw their designs come to life with impressive precision. Students also explored coding by programming an electronic mini golf game, developing their understanding of circuits, inputs, and interactive gameplay.

It was wonderful to see students so engaged, creative, and enthusiastic throughout the experience. Many left feeling inspired by the possibilities of STEM and excited about future pathways in design and technology.

Exploring the Brain in Forensic Psychology (Year 9/10)

Our Year 9 and 10 students have been exploring the fascinating field of forensic psychology, with a focus on understanding the structure and function of the human brain. Through interactive lessons, students examined how different brain regions influence behaviour, decision-making, and emotional responses—key ideas when investigating criminal behaviour.

To consolidate their learning, students designed and created “brain hats”—innovative, wearable models representing the structure of the brain. This hands-on activity supported both creativity and deeper understanding, with students confidently identifying and explaining functions of areas such as the frontal lobe, cerebellum, and brain stem.

Year 10 Chemistry – Flame Test Practical

In Chemistry, Year 10 students carried out a flame test practical to observe how different metal ions produce distinct flame colours. This engaging experiment helped students connect theoretical concepts to real-world applications, including fireworks and chemical analysis.

Students demonstrated excellent laboratory skills by working safely, following procedures carefully, and accurately recording their observations. The range of flame colours generated meaningful discussion and strengthened their understanding of atomic structure and energy changes.

Stepping Up in Year 10

This term is an important and exciting one for our Year 10 students, with a range of valuable educational opportunities ahead.

A second Careers Expo is scheduled for 26 May at KIOSC, where students will continue exploring pathways into TAFEs, trades, and further education. In addition, students will be preparing for their Work Experience Week in Week 10. If your child is still seeking a placement, please arrange a careers meeting with Mrs Rundle in the Careers Office as soon as possible. Completing work experience in Year 10 is a vital part of our program and strongly encouraged for all students.

As part of their preparation for VCE and VCE VM in 2027, students will undertake mid-year exams in Week 8 of Term 2. These exams provide valuable insight for teachers into student progress, while also giving students an opportunity to experience what VCE-style assessments may look like. Year 10 teachers in English, Mathematics, Humanities, and Science will be supporting students closely in their exam preparation.

Please ensure that your child is up to date with all coursework and has prepared any permitted bound reference materials required for their exams.

H2GP Information Session at KIOSC

A group of Year 10 students, along with some keen learners from Year 7, attended a Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) information session held at KIOSC. This session introduced students to the exciting possibilities of hydrogen-powered technology and sustainable energy solutions.

The experience provided valuable insight into future-focused STEM opportunities and inspired students to think about pathways in science, engineering, and innovation.

VCE Art Excursion: A Day of Inspiration at NGV and ACMI

Our VCE Art students recently enjoyed an inspiring excursion into the heart of Melbourne’s creative scene. The day began at the NGV Ian Potter Centre, where students had the valuable opportunity to view art journals from exhibiting students in the Top Arts exhibition. As always, Top Arts proved to be a highlight—showcasing exceptional work and offering rich inspiration for our students as they continue to develop their own artistic ideas and practices.

In addition to Top Arts, the Ian Potter Centre’s permanent and temporary exhibitions celebrated the depth and diversity of Australian artistic talent. These displays provided further insight into a wide range of techniques, themes, and creative approaches, enriching students’ understanding of contemporary and historical art.

The excursion concluded at ACMI, where students engaged in an interactive exploration of the history of the moving image. This immersive experience offered a dynamic look at film, media, and digital storytelling, rounding out a day full of creativity, learning, and inspiration.

2026 Student ID cards

We have recently distributed the 2026 Student ID cards to all our students. If you have not yet received your card, please see Ms Kirby in the Library.

Please ensure your Student card is kept in a safe place – there is a fee to have another one produced. The Student cards can be used to verify you age with the Transport Victoria (TV) and at other venues which accept student concessions like Cinemas. Your ID card is also your School Library Card and can be configured to allow ‘quick tap on’ access to the Library Photocopier.

 

Library Leader Program – ANZAC DAY

ANZAC day is a time to remember the sacrifice of the brave men and women who served so that we might live in freedom. Each year, the library marks this day with a special display. Our Year 8 Library Leader Noah was very creative this year and designed this year’s display. All our Year 8 students get the chance to work for a day with our Librarian developing important teamwork and leadership skills while also modelling positive learning behaviours to their peers.

Under the Surface: Understanding Bullying

This term, our Year 8 and Year 9 students began participating in an important two-part workshop, Under the Surface: Understanding Bullying. Through guided reflection and engaging, scenario-based discussions, students explore what bullying can look like beneath the surface, developing a deeper sense of empathy and understanding for others. A key aim of the workshop is to encourage students to pause, think critically, and make thoughtful, respectful choices in challenging situations, rather than reacting impulsively.

The first session, delivered in these first few weeks of Term 2, focused on building students’ awareness of the complexities of bullying and its impact on individuals and the broader school community. The program will continue in Term 3, aligned with the National Week of Action Against Bullying and Violence in August, reinforcing our school’s commitment to fostering respect, safety, and inclusion.

We look forward to continuing this learning journey in the second session, further empowering students to contribute to a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment.

U20 Girls Basketball 3×3 State Finals Recap

Our U20 Girls basketball team represented Fairhills at the 3×3 State Finals with an outstanding display of skill, teamwork, and resilience.

The team started the day strongly in pool play. They opened with a solid win over SEDA, taking the game 17–8. They followed this up with another strong performance against St Ignatius, winning 17–7. In a tighter contest, Fairhills held their composure to defeat SEDA Dandenong 2 15–13. They rounded out pool play with a 12–8 win over St Monica’s, finishing the round undefeated.

The momentum continued into the finals, where the team produced some dominant performances. In the quarter final, Fairhills were outstanding, defeating SEDA Dandenong 1 21–2 with a clinical display on both ends of the floor. They carried that form into the semi final, where they overcame Christian College Geelong 21–15 in a competitive and physical match to book a place in the grand final.

In the grand final, Fairhills came up against a strong Mount Ridley side. Despite a determined effort, Fairhills went down in the championship game.
Overall, it was an exceptional tournament from the team, showcasing high-level defence, smart decision-making, and real growth under pressure. Reaching the grand final is a fantastic achievement and something the group should be very proud of.

Congratulations to all players involved on representing Fairhills with pride throughout the day.

Year 7 Term 1 Celebration BBQ – A Fantastic Evening

On Thursday 30 April, we were thrilled to host our Year 7 Term 1 Celebration BBQ, which saw a fantastic turnout from our school community. It was wonderful to see so many families come together to enjoy a delicious BBQ, connect with one another, and share in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

The evening was filled with laughter, great conversations, and a strong sense of community as families mingled and celebrated a successful start to the year. Events like these are a great way to build positive relationships and recognise the achievements of our Year 7 students.

Thank you to all the families who attended and helped make the evening such a success. We are incredibly proud of our Year 7 students and are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

 

The Free Library open again at Fairhills High School

We are excited to announce that the Fairhills High School Free Library is back for 2026!

The Free Library is a wonderful initiative designed to encourage a love of reading across our school community. Open to all students, the library allows students to take a book, share a book, or swap a book — completely free of charge. Whether you’re an avid reader or just looking to try something new, the Free Library is a great way to discover different genres, authors, and stories.

Located in the Year 7 Foyer Area, the Free Library operates on a simple idea: take a book you’d like to read and, when you can, return it or replace it with another book to keep the shelves stocked for others.

In 2026, we are looking forward to expanding the range of books available, including young adult fiction, fantasy, graphic novels, non-fiction, and more.

We warmly welcome donations of books in good condition that would be of interest to our students.

VCE English Club is back for 2026. If you want extra help with everything English this is the place to come! You can get help from experienced VCE English teachers and smash English in 2026!

Homework Club

When: Wednesdays, 2:45 – 4:00 PM
Where: Resource Learning Hub

Join us every Wednesday after school in a welcoming space where students can work on homework or class tasks with support available.
All students are encouraged to attend. Homework Club is a great opportunity to stay on top of your learning in a calm, supportive, and inviting environment.

Fairhills Choir

Where: Music Classroom

Come down to the music classroom Tuesday Lunchtimes and join in the fun. Chat to any of the music teachers if you have questions.

Japanese Club(日本部)

When: Every second (Week B) Thursday at lunchtime

Japanese Club is a place where you can be a curious, creative and confident learner about all things Japanese culture and language.

We are particularly looking for anyone with skills in anything Japanese, so please if you have a skill contact Winstone sensei at jessica.winstone@education.vic.gov.au. Parents very welcome to come share Japanese cultural or language skills if you have them!

However, to come to Japanese Club you don’t need anything but enthusiasm.

The first Japanese Club will run on Thursday March 5 at lunchtime in M03. After that it will run every second Thursday.

VEX Robotics Competition Teams

The VEX Robotics Competition is an engaging, hands-on STEM program where students design, build, and code their own robots to complete specific challenges. It fosters teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation as students compete against other schools in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Hydrogen Car Grand Prix Teams

When: Tuesdays, 2:45 – 3:45 PM and Friday Lunchtime 1:05 – 1:40 PM
Where: STEM Portable

The Hydrogen Car Grand Prix introduces students to renewable energy and sustainable engineering. Teams design, build, and race model cars powered by hydrogen fuel cells, learning about clean energy technologies, aerodynamics, and mechanical systems in a fun and practical way.

Year 9 My Career Insights – Morrisby Profiling

On Wednesday the 25 March the Year 9 students will be undertaking their Morrisby profiling in their Connect program.

My Career Insights is a program for all Year 9 students (or equivalent in specialist settings) in Victorian Government secondary schools.

Students will be given the opportunity to complete a series of questionnaires and quizzes accessed through the Morrisby website. They will then discuss their results with a Careers Consultant in a 30-minute one on one interview scheduled for Term 2.

My Career Insights will help students discover, develop, and drive their career planning. It is a unique opportunity for students to learn more about their strengths and abilities while exploring potential career options giving them the confidence to start taking control of their future.

Year 12 VCE Vocational Major – TAFE Experience

On Friday the 6 February the Year 12 VCE VM class visited two of Melbourne’s big TAFE providers- Holmesglen Chadstone campus and Box Hill Elgar campus.

This was an amazing opportunity for students to see some of the lesser-known trades and all the fantastic facilities available to them.

The day was inspiring and help to sow the seeds ready for the transition into the community.

Year 11 and 12 VET 2026

Vet classes have all made a positive start in 2026.

Vocational education and training delivered within the VCE enables students to gain an understanding of a specific industry while building fantastic employability skills.

Given that VET classes run once a week, it is critical that students make every effort to attend. If they are unable to attend due to illness, they must contact both their VET training provider and the office.

Students in VCE Mainstream will have timetabled classes on a Wednesday and it is their responsibility to catch up on work missed. Students should organise their transport to and from VET to ensure that they stay at school for as many classes as possible in the AM and return to school for Period 5 where possible.

If you have any concerns, please in relation to VET programs please don’t hesitate in contacting Liz Rundle – VET Coordinator.

Year 10 Work Experience 2026

All Tear 10 students are required to undertake 1 week of work experience in 2026.

Work experience is an important part of the Careers program, enabling students to experience an industry and learn more about the world of work enabling them to better plan their individual career pathway.

Work experience is scheduled for the last week of Term 2, 22 – 26 June.

Students a will be provided with the resources they need in level assembly.

It is critical that students start to research and lock down their placements now.

Year 10 Careers expo and tertiary campus tour – March 20

On March 20 all Year 10 students will be attending the Victorian Careers expo. This is a huge event that enables students to talk to employers, training organisations and industry representatives.

In addition, they will also have a tour of the Swinburne Hawthorn campus facilities and find out what this big dual tertiary provider has on offer, ranging from the trades to university.

This event is open on compass for registration and payment.

Parents/carers are provided with log in details. For any questions or trouble logging in please contact the General Office. Using Compass allows parents/carers to have access to up-to-date information and the following features:

  • Phone the absence hotline on 9758 5022. Leave a message after the prompt. The absence hotline is operational 24hrs a day, 7 days a week for your convenience.

Student’s arriving to school late are required to sign in (using their Student ID Card) on the Compass Kiosk machine at the General Office.

If a student is required to leave school early for any reason they should bring a note from their parent/guardian and record this on Compass. All students are required to sign out from the General Office.  If they need to call home, they should come to the office.  Students should not use their mobiles.

Asthma / Diabetes / Anaphylaxis / Epilepsy

ASTHMA, DIABETES, ANAPHYLAXIS, EPILEPSY or an ALLERGY management plans are required to be updated and submitted to the school every 12 months. Please ensure you have provided this to the office in the best interest of your child.

Parent Carpark – pick up and drop off

If you drop/pick up your children please ensure you:

  • use the parent car park – not the staff/guest car park, except for those with a disability parking permit
  • pull into a parent parking spot to let your child out/pick them up
  • when exiting turn left onto Scoresby road (as per the sign)

Accessing Support through Wellbeing for Students

The Wellbeing Team can support students to navigate challenges that may be impacting on their ability to engage in learning or general feelings of wellbeing. This can include: transitions and adjusting to change, family or relationship difficulties, grief and loss, mental health concerns, drug and alcohol concerns, and many other challenges that young people encounter.

An initial appointment with a member of the wellbeing team will be an assessment of need with the student or family which will help to decide the best support option for the student. Support options available through the Wellbeing Team are:

  • Individual short-term counselling, psychoeducation and skills development
  • Group programs
  • Referrals to external support agencies.
  • Students may also be encouraged to access self-help strategies or resources.

Referrals to see someone from the team are made through year level leaders. Parents, students or teachers with concerns are encouraged to speak to their year level leader. Students or parents can also make an appointment directly with someone from the Wellbeing Team by attending the Wellbeing Centre, calling the school office.

Year level leaders who are made aware of concerns by a teacher will always endeavour to make contact with parents before referring a student to the Wellbeing team.
All counselling sessions with students are confidential and information is only shared if a student is deemed to be at risk of harm.

What’s on in Wellbeing?

The Wellbeing Centre is open at recess and lunchtime for students who need a quiet, safe place to regulate or access support. The centre is also used for lunchtime group programs which are advertised through compass or on notice boards.

Accessing Support for Families

Many families, at some stage, need a little extra support to manage the normal challenges of life as well as the more difficult situations that arise. If you are experiencing hardship, stress or circumstances that are impacting on the wellbeing of your family life or your ability to cope, the Wellbeing Team can help to connect you with community services that can provide support. Please contact the Wellbeing Team via the school phone number.

Breakfast Club

With the support of volunteers from local churches- Knox Baptist and Hillsong Church we provide breakfast club 5 days a week for our students from 8:15-8:40am. There are a range of healthy breakfast options available including cereals, toast, cheese toasties and fruit. Students are also able to access mini-milk drinks, fruit and free Tasty Truck (day old) sandwiches at Breakfast Club and at lunch time.

Food Support for families in need

Each fortnight on a Tuesday after school from 2:40 PM- 3:00 PM we have food support available for families who may be in need, for whatever reason. We have a selection of frozen meals and pantry items that families can collect from the former school canteen area without question or judgement. We know that access to food can be a real challenge for some families and we feel strongly about supporting the basic needs of our students and families. Watch out for compass posts each fortnight.
